Easter Success

We had a great Easter this year.  It was our first real Holiday away from home, and it was a little tough for me.  I spent the day before making all sorts of goodies, and kept finding myself wishing that I was with my mom baking.

The kids loved that the Easter Bunny came and left them each a small gift- a game for Austin and a movie for Sydney along with some chocolate.  Austin then got a haircut and we all got ready and headed off to the Hammonds for Easter.

We had to many snack foods that we were all stuffed before dinner was even ready.  It was an awesome time- the kids had a BLAST playing with all the other kids, and hunting their eggs.

We are so thankful that we have friends here to spend holidays with- it makes being away so so much easier!

We got home a little later than anticipated, and went to call family, and of course our phone was dead- go figure!  I did get to Skype with my mom and dad, so I went to bed with a smile on my face.

Hope everyone had a great Easter!!

Ostermarket fun.... or not

Soooo today, the fam gathered up and went to the next village over for the Ostermarket.  Which just means Easter Market.  I was pretty excited to go see all the neat things, and buy a couple cutsie German Easter things.  Not the case!  There was a total of ONE Easter themed booth!! The rest were tents and tents full of clothes, purses, jewelry and scarves.  We weren't real thrilled!  However, they had a little kiddie roller coaster and the kids loved that!  We also tried out our first German Crepe with banana and Nutella inside.  It was pretty good!  The kids also saw the Creepy Easter Bunny on the way out, and they got Easter Eggs from him.  A real egg!  Dyed all pretty and all.  So they thought that was pretty cool.

We came home and played catch with Austin, while Sydney moved all the rocks out of the rock bed "worked".  That's what she said anyways.

Afterwards, we made the kids go clean up their playroom.  It was about a 15 minute job, and it took them exactly 2 hours.  ;o)  At one point, Sydney even came down and told on herself, saying "I'm not helping Bubba clean up".  So that was pretty funny! Between the two of them, they definitely keep us laughing!

On another note, we have some news.  We weren't exactly expecting it, however, we've decided it will be the best for our family here in Germany.  We've decided to put our name back on the Base Housing list.  Our current house now, we absolutely love.  We love the house. However, it is about a half our away from base, which, already is proving to be a lot.  The gas alone between our two vehicles is killer, it's about $4.15 a gallon right now here.  Although- I am very thankful we don't pay German gas prices- they're paying over $9 a gallon.

Another reason, our biggest reason, is the kids.  Austin will be starting Kindergarten this coming year, and will have to ride the bus quite a ways both ways.  I'm really just not comfortable with that at his age.  Another, the biggest reason, with the kids, is that there are literally NO American kids around here.  The one German boy across the street doesn't speak any English what so ever, and just stares blankly at Austin when he tries to interact with him.  I feel bad for him, he's so bored, and asks all the time why the boy won't play with him, and why he isn't making any friends here.  On base, everywhere you look there are kids running around, playgrounds galore, etc.  There isn't a play area in our town, nor the neighboring town that we have found so far.

With not having Americans around us, it's lonely.  Very lonely.  I love how beautiful it is here, seeing all the German homes, being immersed in the culture- but it boils down to the kids and I being home alone all day from 5am to about 5:30 or 6:00pm when Bryant comes home.  Dinner time, bed time.  It's just lonely.

So, we will be putting our name on the housing list tomorrow, and hope and pray for the best.  I know we will go where we need to be, but we are praying we end up in a town home.  They are duplex style, like we had in Mountain Home, however, units are in high demand, and not many are available.  So it is possible we will be in Stairwell type housing.  I'll definitely keep you up to date on this, just maybe pray or cross your fingers or whatever you wanna do for us, that we get to the top of the waiting list quickly!  One of my friends was called within 2 weeks of putting their name on the wait list, however, we've heard of it taking up to 3-6 months.  I just want to be settled.  And enjoy this amazing country!!!

ANOTHER bit of SUPER exciting news that we have is................

We booked our trip to Garmish Germany for Thanksgiving this year!!!!!  We are incredibly excited, and cannot wait.  Of course we hope to travel between now and then, but still!!  There is a military resort there that we will be staying at: http://www.edelweisslodgeandresort.com/home.html

So you can go check it out if you'd like!  We are going with another family, possibly two.  It is going to be such a blast.  Right at the base of the Swiss Alps- who can argue with that?!  Definitely not this girl!

Oh! Austin also is learning to tie his shoes!

 The Ostermarket
The one, lone Easter booth. Real eggs though- they are painted very intricately!

 And our beautiful girl
This is pretty much their enthusiasm at the Market today =)
We may or may not have threatened them for this picture.  And still, look at them! ha!

Hope you all enjoyed this!  We love & miss you all like CRAZY!!!!

Scary day.

Sydney woke up with a 103.4 fever.  This isn't all too new for her, she runs high fevers a lot.  But I just figured after being on antibiotics for almost a month, plus having her tubes in, that we would not see this number again.  Boy was I wrong.  By afternoon, around 4:30 actually, her temp was up to 105.2.  And this is with Tylenol and Motrin in her system all day.  I jumped up so fast it probably scared her and rushed upstairs to wake Bry.  He needed to watch Austin so I could get her to the doctor.

They gave her her next dose of tylenol, drew blood, cathed her.  Her urine and blood came back clean.  Nothing elevated to an alarming level what-so-ever.  He did look in her ears, and said that her left tube was in place, but her eardrum was red.  Could it be infected?  Or could it just be from having her tubes done and still trying to heal?  Her right ear had blood in it, I assume from tube placement.  But he could not see her tube.  I will be calling the ENT in the morning to try to get her appointment that's on the 10th to earlier in the month.  I think that with telling them what the ER doc saw they won't have a problem rushing her appointment.

We got home around 7pm from the ER.  We tried to get her to eat some, which she wouldn't.  All day.  She then layed on me while I ate since she screamed in her highchair.  She ended up falling asleep around 8pm on me, so I took her up to bed.  She did sleep all night, which I am very thankful for since I am sick as well.  We both needed our sleep.

She is napping now- which is an improvement from yesterday.  She hate some apple jacks this morning, and a couple bites of banana.  She also drank about 6oz of water- so I'll take what I can get.

I take her back in today so we will see what they have to say.  I will be getting in contact with her regular pediatrician tomorrow to try and get an appointment with them asap.  I almost want to ask them if I can get a referral off base for a second opinion.  I just can't shake the nagging feeling inside me that they are missing something huge.  I mean- she has been having high fevers basically since January.  It is now August 1st with no improvement.  She's had so many antibiotics in her little life than I even know what to do with- along with numerous testing and tubes placed.  All to no avail.  No child should run a 105.2 fever for no reason.  Something is there.  Something they aren't finding.  And I want it found. I want answers.  This is making my baby girl miserable, and that's NOT okay.

Anyhow, that was my day yesterday.  While I hate hate hate her being so sick, I do have to admit that I love the cuddles.  She layed on me all day yesterday, and wouldn't let me put her down.  Even when I shifted positions, she would cry.  She was just miserable.

Anyhow, I'll keep ya'll updated.

Sydney's all ears!

Sydney finally went in on the 14th to get her tubes.  Just wanted to update everyone, and let you know that she did wonderfully.  From the time the doctor took her back to the OR to the time they brought her back to us was about 7 minutes total.  Her breath reeked of the gas mask, so that was weird.  She cried and cried and cried- but they warned us that was going to happen, and completely normal.  Once she fully woke up, and had some to drink, and we were out of the building, she did great.  She slept some on the way home, ate some cereal, and was smiling when she woke up.

Since she got her tubes in, she's done great.  You wouldn't even know that she had anything done, except for the dry blood/drainage around her ears!  She's normal, happy Sydney.  She is listening better, and really paying attention to what we say... she seems to be understanding better- so I'm thankful for that.  I don't think she was hearing too well before she got her tubes in with the constant fluid she had built up in her ears.

Anyways- Sydney is doing GREAT!

A bit behind...

I realize I've been slacking this past week on blogging, and I'm sorry! Can't seem to get normal this week, and it's kicking my butt! I still have an entire album left to upload from Twin Lakes, and I'll get to it. Just not today. =)

First things first.... Sydney rolled over yesterday for the first time!!!! Are you as shocked as we were/are?!?! She's only 2 1/2 months old!!!! Austin was almost 5 months when he rolled over the first time, I am just thoroughly impressed!!! Here's a picture of her right after she rolled over: (I took one of Austin, so I had to get one of her too!)

How amazing is that?! She's so great!! And yesterday she also laughed, out loud for the first time as well. It wasn't a long laugh, just a little one... but it was a laugh none the less. And she's got a cute one, I'll tell you what! =) She melts my heart daily. She is also smiling a lot more. When you talk to her now, she grins and grins, it's so sweet. She also watches Austin a lot. When he's dancing around in the living room, or hopping, she will just stare at him. Earlier today he was leaned over her playing with her hand and talking to her, and she was just grinning away. I didn't get the camera ready fast enough, and it was all over with, dang it! Guess I should be more on top of this!

This week, I've only went to the gym twice. I feel like such a slacker. Tuesday and Wednesday I was cleaning my house, the distaster it'd become. Dad H., Nancy, and Uncle Paul came Wednesday evening to stay for the night. They are driving to a reunion in Missouri, so they all stopped here on the way. They came bearing gifts for Austin- a new train track set to go with his old one. As well as another "tunnel" piece for it. He loves it. I will post pictures of that tomorrow. (Or Monday...haha)

Weigh in day was Friday. I have lost 2 pounds. Good job and all, but I'm discouraged. I thought my first week I'd see a fairly large number.... at least 5. With starting to work out, and being on Weight Watchers strict, I thought it'd shock my body into weight loss mode. I was wrong. I wonder if breastfeeding has anything to do with it? I don't know, but I'm still discouraged about it. I'll keep trucking, because I've got far to much weight to lose to quit. I want to be healthy for my kids. Plus I want to look hot, duh, I'm a girl. =)

Well, I better get the dessert made for dinner tonight. We're off to the Rey's for dinner. Tifiney and Dan Rey. They were both in my brothers class in school, and oddly enough just moved here from Germany. Dan is in the Air Force.... crazy small world!

Oh- and tomorrow is Austin's 3rd birthday!!!! THREE!!! WOW! Where does time go?! We're headed to church in the morning, and then after that, we're taking him to Toys R Us to buy a train, then to Chuck-e-Cheeze with one of his friends. He'll come back and open some presents, and then next Saturday we're having a birthday party for him. Spoiled boy!

Ok Ok, I gotta go! Have a good Saturday everyone!!

What a concerned big brother!

Yesterday, I had Sydney in her bouncy chair hanging out. Well, sleeping rather. She woke up, and I wasn't RIGHT THERE to feed her, so of course, she got a little pissed. (She's hitting a growth spurt, so the ONLY thing she's doing is sleeping, and eating. That's it. Well, pooing too of course....

Anyways, Austin was with me, and noticed that she was upset, so being the good big brother he is, he had to make sure that she was ok. I just thought it was too cute... I caught the end of him checking on her. It's so sweet. =)

Today is Bryant's birthday as well. He's 27 today!!! Wowza!! So Happy Birthday to you babe! I'm off to make you your chocolate cake that you want (which I am OKAY with, considering I am highly addicted to chocolate at the moment...) so hope you like it! =)

A blog title fails me....

Well, Sydney had her two week check up on Friday. She's doing so great! She was born at 6lbs 15oz. and at two weeks old, now weighs in at 7lbs 5oz. She's grown almost an inch, and her jaundice is almost gone. She's doing so great!!

I still can't believe how blessed we are! She came a month early, and the only thing that was wrong with her was a slight case of jaundice. Jaundice that didn't even require her to be put under the belly lights. How amazing is that?! No NICU, nothing. She must have definitely been ready to come, and she wasn't taking no for an answer. Does that sound like a girl to you?? :)

I also had my two week check up for my c-section on Friday. I'm doing good as well. The cut is healing nicely, and I've lost half of the weight I gained while pregnant, so I am thrilled about that! At my 6 week check-up, I fully expect to be back to my pre-pregnancy weight, if not a little lighter. God knows I could stand to lose a few more.... HAHAH!

Austin has been amazing with Sydney. We couldn't have asked for him to be any better. Sure he's whiney, sure he's testing us more than normal, but he's been such a good boy. We've been absolutely shocked. He loves his sister, and still asks to hold her all the time. We have to be really careful with him though- when he's done holding her he's done. And if you aren't paying attention, he WILL pick her up and try to hand her to you. NOT so good! EEKS!
But all in all it's going great. He's still sleeping at night, still taking his naps (which I pray and pray and pray that they continue) and still going potty in the toilet. That was a big concern of mine.... that he'd revert. But so far, so good! Wish us luck!! :)

My mom and dad left today. I'm sad. I already want them back. My mom helped us sooooo much. Cooking, cleaning, staying up with Sydney some nights, changing diapers, (the icky ones especially!!) keeping Austin entertained, letting me nap, ect, ect, ect! I don't even know what I'm going to do without her gone. Cope, like I did when she left after we had Austin.... but still!

My dad had his birthday while he was here. When he got up that morning, Austin informed him that he was "older than dirt." He may or may not have had coaching. :)

I think that's all our news for now! Hopefully my next update will be a great one!

Happy Days :)

Pictures first...... then read on!

My little diva :) Complete with armpit wrinkles... they're so cute!
All cozy after her bath

My finger was in the flash, of course, on the cutest one :) Not sure if that spot under her nose is going to go away, or if it's her birthmark.... we shall see!!

Look at that curl in her hair! Only really shows when it's wet!

Loves getting her hair washed.... her favorite part of bath time

Her umbilical cord thing fell off, so she got a normal bath!!

Daddy and his baby girl

Sydney in her swing that Aunt Chelsea and Uncle Chris got her....she loved it!

Baby toes.... she was sooooo passed out on the couch!

Austin checking out sissy's hands again

Sydney sunning herself, and Austin making sure she's okay!

Things are still going fairly well. Sydney hasn't been sleeping well in her cradle, so we decided to try a couch cushion, since she passed right out on the cushion for a nap yesterday. Mom stayed downstairs with her last night for us so we could get some MUCH NEEDED sleep. She slept like a champ. Waking every two and a half hours is a steal compared to every hour. Mom brought her upstairs to feed and then we'd bring her back down to sleep. She did great. So it looks like the cradle may not be in the cards for Miss Sydney Linn. But whatever can help her get that needed sleep (for us too!!) is well worth it. And she must have felt better after such a great night because she stayed awake for almost 3 hours this morning. That's huge for her! She hasn't stayed awake for more than about 40 minutes at a time since she was born, so being able to watch her be awake and alert for so long was really neat. She's kind of trying to track things that are in her line of view which is great to see. She's really a very very happy baby. She smiles a lot, and even has chuckled a couple times while smiling. It's so dang cute! She is still in preemie clothes, which I imagine she'll be in for a couple more weeks. She should be hitting a little growth spurt here in the next week or so, so maybe I'll finally be able to put her into something other than the few onesies that we have for her that are preemie! We were fully NOT expecting a preemie baby, so had nothing smaller than newborn for her. And even newborn clothes, we didn't have many of.

Sydney has her 2 week check up on Friday. I am so excited to see how she is doing and how much weight she has gained. She seems to be thriving and I am so incredibly thankful for that. When I think of the realm of things, with her being 4 weeks early, and think to what could be, and what is.... we are so lucky. I will gladly take two hours of sleep per night if it means that I have a healthy baby girl. And healthy she is. Her jaundice levels are very low now, the yellowing is subsiding, she's eating much better, goes through plenty of diapers, loves her baths, smiles huge, and seems to already know my voice. She's so amazing.

Austin loves his sister too. He asks daily, more than once, to hold her. He loves holding her and touching her hands and toes. He's so obsessed with how little she is. Sometimes we think that he thinks she's more of a play toy than a real live person. I was shocked that he actually understands that sissy came out of mommy's belly. He is still telling me every now and then that sissy came out of my bewwy. When he goes down for a nap, or to bed at night, he always gives her a kiss... it's just so sweet. I can't wait until they can start interacting a little more. (Yes, I CAN wait.... I wish I could freeze time right now.... but you know what I mean.)

All the Details..... and a LOT of pictures!!

I'll start off first by apologizing. I know I shouldn't, but I feel like I have to! It's been over a week now, and everyone has been asking and asking what happened, and how and why Sydney came so early. So I'm sorry for it taking so incredibly long to post a blog to let everyone know the details!

With that said..............

I started having contractions (again.....) on Friday, May 29th around 3pm. We had planned to have friends up for dinner and have a relaxing evening at home. I'd just finished making Sydney's curtains for her room the day before, and also finished her baby sling this day. (The 29th) Anyways, contractions started at around 3pm, and I tried to be stubborn and say that I was okay and that I didn't need to go in to get monitored. But about 4:00 the contractions were actually getting painful, so off we went. We figured that we'd go in, I'd get monitored, they'd give me a shot to stop my contractions, just as they did when I kept going into pre-term labor with Austin, and they'd send us home. That sure didn't happen!! (As you already know!)

We were at the hospital by 4pm, and by 4:17, I was hooked up to all the monitors, and nurses were running in and out of the room at every contraction (3 minutes apart) worrying and fretting to see if I was okay. Everyone there knew that I was to be a scheduled c-section, so a natural child birth was NOT an option. They checked my cervix, and I was dialated to a 3.
At this point, there were only a couple options for me. They'd decided that they were going to give me a shot of terbutaline to stop my contractions, and if the medicine completely stopped them, then I'd be able to go home the next morning, and wouldn't have to go back to the hospital until my next scheduled appointment, and hopefully be able to deliver her on June 22nd as planned. If the medicine didn't stop the contractions, (regardless if they stopped contractions or not, they'd decided they were keeping me over night to monitor me and baby) then they were going to try to hold off until mid-night to do the c-section. (I was only 35 weeks and 6 days when I went in on the 29th.... on base, they will only deliver babies that are 36 weeks and beyond due to not having a NICU, nor the staff/equipment to care for a preemie baby) If they could hold my labor steady until mid-night, I would officially be 36 weeks pregnant, and they could do the c-section with no problems. If my labor kept intensifying, they'd decided they were going to life flight me to Boise. Not that I was in a life or death situation, nor was Sydney, but they were so afraid that if it came down to needing to be sent to Boise, that I would end up having her in an ambulance on the transport to Boise.
By about 5pm they gave me a shot of terbutaline to stop my contractions. It worked for an hour or so, and then I started having contractions right through it. So after that, they gave me terbutaline in the form of a pill. It was suppose to stop contractions for up to 6 hours. That didn't work either, I just kept laboring through that medicine. After this, my Dr. decided that I really needed to be sent to Boise. With my contractions as strong as they were, and not stopping with the shots of terbutaline, he didn't believe that I would be able to make it until mid-night without having the baby.

At this point, we'd already called some friends of ours to see if they could take Austin for the night. They have a son that is only a month younger than Austin and they just love playing together, and we knew he'd be in good hands. Bryant had left to get Austin's bags packed, and get him the happy meal from BK that we promised him if he was good in the hospital when the doctor told me that I would be being flown to Boise via helicopter. So the doctor tells me I'd better get on the phone with my husband and get him back to the hospital quickly. Not knowing how SLOW a medevac can go, I thought I was about to get on the helicopter right then and leave without Bryant knowing. So I call Bryant and tell him he'd better get back right away because I was about to be flown to St. Lukes. He of course, is in BK getting Austin something to eat, and tells the people to make it a to go order...QUICK... and runs out the door. He meets our friends Adam and Rachel at the BX (luckily they were already on base when we called them, because they were going to be coming to our house for dinner that evening.) and then drives (like a mad man I'm sure) back to the hospital. He makes it in plenty of time, considering the helicopter hadn't even made it to base yet. Go figure. He runs into my room, sweating and breathing hard. He'd ran from the car all the way up to my room thinking I was probably gone already. I felt so bad. We sat there for another 20 minutes or so before we saw the helicopter fly by. So when we saw that, Bryant left for Boise. It took another good 45 minutes for them to get me all set up for the ride. While the helicopter was at St. Lukes getting ready to come get me, I was given another medicine that was suppose to completely wipe out my contractions. It was Magnesium something or other.... sulfate....? I don't remember.... but let me tell you, that stuff is NOT FUN! They give it through the IV, and it makes you flushed like crazy, hotter than hell, woozy, sick to the stomach feeling, seeing funny.... just crappy all around. I wasn't really looking forward to a helicopter ride, I'll tell ya that much!!
Everyone keeps asking me if it was just so cool. Sure, it was cool. But if you've never ridden in a helicopter, on a life flight, strapped to a stretcher, in labor, having contractions.... No. It wasn't fun. I was a little too nervous, stressed and worried about having my baby girl 4 weeks early to really "be in the moment" to enjoy my 18 minute helicopter ride. (I will admit to one absolutely gorgeous view though.... we were just about to St. Lukes and there was a spot where the sun was setting on snow capped mountains.... that WAS beautiful.....)

So anyways, we get to St. Lukes, Bry had already been there for about 25 minutes. He was already scrubbed up and waiting, as were all the nurses. They bring me into my recovery room and Dr. Lee wanted to hook me up to monitors to check my contractions. He said he wanted to "make sure that I was really in labor" before they took Sydney a month early. Which I completely understand... But seriously?! Getting a life flight from base and going through everything I'd just went through....?!?! THIS BETTER BE REAL LABOR or I'm gonna beat someone! :) HAHA! Needless to say, it WAS real labor, so he finally called it, and went to get ready for the C-Section.

Sydney was born on May 29th at 10:20pm. She was 19 3/4 inches long and weighed 6lbs 15oz. When Dr. Lee took her out, he said, "Uhhhh..... this doesn't LOOK like a preemie!!!" Almost a 7 pound little girl, and she came 4 weeks early!! Can you imagine if she would have went full term?! She would have been a little pony like her momma!! (9lbs 15oz)

Everything went great. She was healthy, and didn't even have to be admitted into the NICU. Once home, she developed a little bit of jaundice. She had a slight reading of it in the hospital, but nothing to be concerned about. But a day after we got home, her levels read higher, and then the next day they were even higher. So we had to go back for yet another heel prick 2 days later (when she was 1 week old) and it came back that her levels were going back down. YES!!
She still has her days and nights mixed up... (of course she sleeps like an angel in the hospital and not so much at home...) but she is so absolutely precious. I'm still in shock that I finally have my little baby girl! :)

We feel so incredibly blessed, and I really do feel as if our family is complete now.

Here are some pictures from the past week. And to answer your question.....
